ABOUT VICTORIA_BRUNO

Artist Statement

As an artist, I work to create ideas that speak about medical intervention and surgical procedures of the body in regards to my own experience within my practice; being able to capture the physical scars and lifelong effects, as well as the mental trauma that these procedures have caused, has always been an interesting development within my work. With that idea in mind, my artwork tends to be very vocal about issues surrounding mental and physical health from the female perspective and ideas of my own body and how I present that aspect of myself towards others.

I create art with the idea of being semi-abstract with underlying symbolism of the body to reflect the reality of my own experiences. Representations of the human form are usually represented within my work through the use of large bodily imagery; this being large-scaled depictions of the body that I render by looking at various medical journals and diagrams that represent the different procedures that my body has endured.

I find that the relationship between materials and concepts plays an important role during my process. Before I begin working on these concepts regarding human biology, I find it best to research a variety of medical diagrams and journals to get a visual feel of certain parts of the body. From there, I can then pick out a material that would work best in representing the texture and aesthetic qualities of the human body.

My work is not created merely to replicate the human body, but to display aspects of the human condition that others might not see or know about. Such as visually depicting different nerves of the body to display anxiety in regards to how these seemingly simple physical elements of our bodies have such a strong effect on our mental health. Representing mortality is also an interesting concept within my work, such as depicting how a corpse rots after death; by doing this, I am able to convey how fragile the physical states of our bodies are, and how easily they can be manipulated when we are no longer in control. I would consider my artwork to be Expressionist in nature, as I present my art towards others with the notion of displaying the subjective truth of our bodies to the viewer, as my work is not created to be cut in stone.
